An award winning art historian, scholar and curator, Driskell made contributions considered foundational to the field of African American Art. He curated over 35 exhibitions of work by black artists including Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden and Elizabeth Catlett.
His painting, "Behold Thy Son," depicting the mutilated corpse of Emmett Till was called a "modern day Pieta."
The noted artist was 88 when the coronavirus took his life.
He held the title of Distinguished University Professor of Art Emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park.
